Builder Gel vs. Gel X: What's the Difference?
Builder gel and Gel X are both gel, both look glossy and natural, and both last for weeks, so it's easy to mix them up. They're built for different goals, though. One makes your own nails stronger. The other gives you new length in a single appointment. Here's how to tell which one you're after.
What builder gel is
Builder gel is a thick, structured gel that your nail tech shapes over your natural nails and cures under an LED light. It adds a strong but flexible layer, so your nails stop bending, peeling, and snapping while they grow.
It's usually worn at your natural length or a little longer. If you want more length, we can add tips underneath. As your nails grow, you come back for a refill instead of starting over.
What Gel X is
Gel X is a full-cover soft gel tip. Each tip is pre-shaped to cover your whole nail, and we attach it with gel adhesive. You walk out with long almond, coffin, or square nails right away, all perfectly matched.
Gel X isn't refilled. Most clients wear a set for about 3 to 4 weeks, then soak it off and get a fresh set.
How they compare
Length: Gel X gives you instant length. Builder gel works with the length you have, unless we add tips.
Strength for your own nails: Builder gel is the better pick if your goal is healthier, longer natural nails. It protects them while they grow out underneath.
Upkeep: Builder gel gets a refill every 3 to 4 weeks as your nails grow. Gel X gets a new set about every 3 to 4 weeks.
Removal: Have either one taken off at the salon. Peeling or prying them off at home is what damages natural nails.
What each costs at The Nail Lounge
Builder gel full sets start at $60 on your natural nails and $65 with tips, and builder gel refills start at $50. Gel X extensions start at $70. Taking off either one on its own is $15.
French tips, chrome, cat eye, and nail art are added on top. You can see every price on our services page.
Which should you choose?
Choose builder gel if your nails break easily, you like a short to medium natural look, or you want to grow out your own nails.
Choose Gel X if you want long nails today, love detailed nail art, or want a fresh new shape every few weeks.
Not sure? Tell your nail tech what you want your nails to look like a month from now, and we'll point you to the right one.
