Gel X vs. Acrylic Nails: Which Is Right for You?
It's the question we hear most at the front desk: "Should I get Gel X or acrylic?" Both give you longer, stronger nails, and both look beautiful when they're done well. They're made differently, though, and that changes how they feel, how long they last, and how they come off. Here's how we explain it to our clients.
What Gel X is
Gel X is a full-cover soft gel tip. Each tip is already shaped and sized to cover your whole nail, and we attach it with a gel adhesive that sets under an LED light. Because the length and shape come from the tip, the result is very even from nail to nail.
Gel X feels light and flexible, a lot like your natural nails, just longer. It's a favorite for almond and coffin shapes, nail art, and anyone who wants length without bulk.
What acrylic is
Acrylic is a liquid and powder that your nail tech mixes into a bead and sculpts onto your nail, or onto a tip, by hand. It hardens in the air into a firm, very strong layer.
Since it's built by hand, acrylic can be shaped into almost anything: extra-long stilettos, sharp squares, ombre, and 3D designs. It's the strongest option we offer, which is why people who are hard on their hands often choose it.
How they compare
Feel: Gel X is lighter and bends a little. Acrylic is thicker and rigid. If you've never worn extensions before, Gel X usually feels more natural.
How long they last: Most clients wear Gel X for about 3 to 4 weeks, then take it off and get a fresh set. Acrylic grows out with your nail, so you come back every 2 to 3 weeks for a fill instead of a whole new set.
Removal: Gel X soaks off in acetone fairly quickly. Acrylic takes longer to soak and file down. Either way, please don't peel or pry them off at home. That's what damages natural nails, not the product itself.
Smell: Gel X has almost no odor. Acrylic has a noticeable smell while it's being applied.
What each costs at The Nail Lounge
Gel X extensions start at $70. Acrylic full sets start at $50, acrylic fills start at $40, and ombre acrylic starts at $60. Taking off either one on its own starts at $15.
Over a few months the total cost comes out similar, since acrylic needs regular fills and Gel X is usually replaced as a new set. Extra length, special shapes, French tips, chrome, and nail art are priced separately. You can see everything on our services page.
Which should you choose?
Choose Gel X if you want a natural, lightweight feel, love nail art, or are getting extensions for the first time.
Choose acrylic if you want very long or dramatic shapes, need the most strength because you use your hands a lot, or like keeping the same set going with fills.
Want something in between? Builder gel and TAP gel strengthen your own nails without much added length, starting at $60. They're a good fit if your nails break easily but you like a shorter, natural look.
