How Long Do Dip Powder Nails Last? (And How to Make Them Last Longer)

Dip powder is one of the most popular services at our salon because it's tough, glossy, and needs no curing light. The most common question we get about it is simple: how long will it last? Here's the honest answer, plus what you can do to get the most out of your set.

The short answer: about 3 to 4 weeks

Most of our clients get 3 to 4 weeks out of a dip manicure before they come back. Some people go a little longer. By then, though, your nails have grown out enough that you can see a gap at the base, and the extra length makes them more likely to snag or lift.

Dip is built in thin layers of colored powder sealed with a strong top coat, which is why it usually outlasts regular polish and often regular gel polish too.

What makes dip nails chip early

Using your nails as tools: Opening cans, peeling labels, and scraping things are the biggest cause of early chips and lifting.

Lots of water and harsh cleaners: Long soaks, dishwashing without gloves, and strong cleaning products slowly weaken the seal along the edges.

Picking: Once a corner lifts, picking at it pulls off the rest of the dip and your natural nail layers with it.

Very fast nail growth: If your nails grow quickly, the grown-out gap shows sooner, so you may want to come back closer to 3 weeks.

How to make your dip manicure last longer

Wear gloves when you clean or wash dishes.

Put cuticle oil on every day or two. Hydrated nails and skin are less likely to crack along the edges.

Use the pads of your fingers, not your nails, to open and press things.

If a nail chips or lifts, come in for a quick repair instead of picking at it. Nail repairs start at $5.

How to take dip powder off safely

Dip has to be filed down and soaked in acetone. Peeling it off takes layers of your natural nail with it and leaves nails thin and sore.

We'll remove it gently for you. Dip take-off on its own starts at $15, or we can take it off before your next set.
