How Often Should You Get a Nail Refill? (Acrylic, Builder Gel & TAP Gel)
Refills are one of the most looked-up services on our menu, and for good reason: a well-timed refill keeps your set looking fresh and keeps your natural nails safe. Here's how often to come in, how to tell when it's time, and why waiting too long can cost you more.
What happens during a refill
As your nails grow, a gap opens up between your cuticle and the product. During a refill, your nail tech files down the old product, fills in that gap, rebalances the shape so the strongest point sits in the right place, and finishes with fresh color.
Refills are for acrylic, builder gel, and TAP gel. Gel X and dip powder aren't refilled; when they grow out, we take them off and do a new set.
How often to get a refill
Acrylic: every 2 to 3 weeks.
Builder gel and TAP gel: about every 3 to 4 weeks.
If your nails grow fast, or you're hard on your hands, come in at the shorter end of the range.
Signs you're due
You can see a clear gap of natural nail at the base.
Your nails feel heavy at the tips or catch on things more often.
An edge is starting to lift, or you notice a small crack.
What happens if you wait too long
As the gap grows, the weight of the product moves out toward the tip, so nails are more likely to break, sometimes painfully. Lifted edges can also let water get underneath.
If a set grows out too far, a simple refill may not be enough and you may need the product taken off and redone. Coming in on time is usually quicker and easier on your nails.
Refill prices at The Nail Lounge
Acrylic refills start at $40, and builder gel and TAP gel refills start at $50. Want your nails shorter? We can cut down the length during any refill for $5. You can see every price on our services page.
To make your set last between refills, use cuticle oil, wear gloves when you clean, and come see us if anything lifts instead of picking at it.
